We’ve seen a lot of strikes and calls to unionize this year, whether it be Starbucks baristas, writers in the entertainment industry or the autoworkers, among many others.
So the question is, why? Why are CEOs driving working people to strike and need to join a union in the first place?
Why are CEOs allowed to get away with not giving their workers a fair shot in living a more comfortable life? Even while some of their workers have 3 jobs and can still barely afford to put food on the table and pay rent.
While CEOs are making millions and paying workers the least they can get away with. A lot of times making a grotesque hundreds of times more than their average worker.
The worker could lose their life savings if a family member gets sick, because they don’t have health insurance.
All of this, while these companies are collecting record profits. And their stocks continue to go up.
So why not take care of the employee? Why treat them like garbage?
The root of it all—is greed.
Greedy CEOs who contribute to greedy politicians who make laws to allow greedy shareholders to make more money.
There is no real reason—besides profit—that corporations have to not pay their employees well and give them the benefits they deserve.
This should be a world where a CEO puts the workers in front of profit. Where investing in the employee, is a key way to success. Where CEOs go to prison for abusing their employees, and pay fines that drive them into bankruptcy for treating workers like dirt.
The best long term investment is not what can drive the biggest profit, it is taking care of the employees who are driving that profit in the first place. Not paying the bare minimum. Not giving no benefits, just because they can get with it.
I don’t know how these CEOs can sleep at night—must be the exorbitantly expensive bed they can afford—paid for by the sweat and blood of those doing the actual work.
Do the right thing for once CEOs—pay your workers a livable wage, give them benefits, and instead of buying another yacht—you can celebrate the fact your employees can spend time with their family. And not spend all of their time at other jobs.
In the long run, it will pay off. And turn out to be the best investment you’ve ever made.
And who knows, maybe you’ll do something good for this world—for once.
I wish I knew who said this, but it definitely applies here:
Poverty exists, not because we can’t feed the poor, but because we can’t satisfy the rich.
Eat the rich.
