In Surprise, (no kidding) AZ, the feds bought a warehouse right across the street from a residential area to convert it to a 1500 bed (yah, sure) detention center. Along with being right next to a residential area, the planned torture prison is right next door to:
* A grammar School
* A middle school/jr.HS
* A high school
And adjacent to the city border with:
** A 70% minority city of 65 Thousand People!
The local community is stepping up. Protests every weekend with additional events through the week. Flooding city hall for meetings. And letting local & State government know that they are pissed off and are going to stay that way!
End result? Unknown at this writing. Please restack if you can
Pretty big numbers too. 65% R District, but a thousand people a week show up to be loud and proud ! First week, I thought we’d be able to have the protest in a phone booth. But a thousand other people thought different. It provides some hope. And aside from a few young men driving by in pickup trucks shouting “Woke” and, “libtard!”, the response from the people driving by has been 99% positive.
I went last Tuesday to the Surprise City Council meeting. There were so many townspeople lined up to speak, I didn’t get to see all of them! I finally had to leave to go home and feed my dogs. This in spite of the fact that they changed the time from 6 pm, which it normally is, to 5 pm, when many people are still at work. I was very encouraged by my fellow Americans! We’ve got to keep it up!
I swung by as well. It is heartening to see so many people engaged. I was going to go signup to speak but decided it would be likely I wouldn’t manage to keep myself composed enough to say anything positive.I worry the new Mayor, who has little to no political capital as a newcomer to the scene, is overmatched on this issue. But I am happy people are showing up and that our Senators, Governor and even our rather useless Congressional Rep all appear to be pushing back!
