I am also telling people to make calls to their representatives especially those Republicans who have been trying for 15 years to get rid of the Affordable Care Act

Yes, I will participate in the mass blackout. It’s about time that we use our spending in a sustained protest of the Trump dictatorship and the oligarchs who have funded it.

Megan Ross's avatar

Me too, but it is unfortunate timing, because of all of the Black Friday sales that hoards of people flock to. I am not one of those people, but there are millions who are.

November 25 is the TUESDAY before Black Friday, and, oh yes, Thanksgiving. I will support the blackout gladly - Black Friday is a cynical corporate retail ploy anyway - I do not support it.

It also hits cyber Monday, another of those ridiculous swarming days. I’d rather eat glass.

Even if we don't go to brick and mortar stores, we can refuse to buy anything online. I think we need a much longer boycott then just Black Friday, though.

Megan Ross's avatar

I agree! A week in between Thanksgiving and Christmas would probably have more impact, and more people need to participate. Unfortunately, we have 90 million people who didn't even bother to vote in November 2024, so I doubt they are going to stop shopping.

Katharine Cosenza Butler's avatar

But we can stop shopping! Every little bit helps -

HarrisWalz FTW 2024's avatar

No, the impact comes from boycotting shopping on the busiest days of the retail year. That's the point of choosing then.

The boycott is November 25-December 2

I believe that's the point. The only thing these people understand is money, and these days, "Black Friday" deals have already started.

I think that’s the point-but it is hard for people now with everything so expensive!! We can all do our part-no matter how small 👍

As I will! And I'll keep that going long after Dec. 2! And everyone should resist the Black Friday sales. too.

Trump’s co-conspirators include Noem and her ICE agents. People seem to forget that “I was just following orders” is not a defense by the Nuremberg Court. They can all be brought up state charges so pardons will be useless this time.

Good point about state charges, such a relief.

This is so important Mike! Keep talking about it! Everyone who has take their oath to protect our Constitution can use that oath as a way to refuse unlawful service. In fact, they must do so, to avoid prosecution!!! I am talking to you who kill people in boats at sea! And you Ice agents who do not follow our laws in so many ways!!! Read the Constitution and know where you stand And of course I am talking to everyone in The Potato's Administration!!!

I think Chicago is setting a precedent that all major city treasurers ought to consider following.

(Can I say how surreal it is for me to be thinking that $200 million just doesn’t sound like a lot of money these days, what with all the billion/trillionaires running around?? Gone are the days when criminals demanded hundreds of thousands in ransom - hell, it was a huge plot point on Perry Mason when $250,000 was involved. That was more than enough for several people to retire on. Now, it’s pocket change to the likes of trump, bezos, musk et al.)

I love what Chicago’s doing, I think every state should do the same! I have been thinking we shouldn’t be paying federal taxes, only state, since this regime started destroying our federal infrastructure / services. Very few Americans want to contribute to what this regime is spending our money on.

I think Chicago is smart to withhold investing in the current regime. Their focus is on their citizens.

Unfortunately I work at a Big Box store. My rent, food, insurance payments rely on that job. I understand the mass boycott, however, there are people on the other side that will be affected. Corporate will reduce benefits and employees before hurting their shareholders profits and that is a difficult place to be in. Please understand the companies you boycott have people relying on their meager salaries to survive.

I agree about the stop work part, Karen. There are emergency services, medical issues to think of and a weekend of no work will put people's needed jobs in jeopardy. Boycott is great, though and should go on longer.

And withholding funds is something this administration understands well. Go Chicago!💪

I love what Ms Conyears-Ervin is doing for Chicago! She’s received some blowback, but this says it all: “Chicagoans’ tax dollars should not be used to fund those who deploy tear gas in the city’s neighborhoods while detaining hundreds of longtime residents.”

I will be participating in the blackout. We all have too much stuff. Use your library!!!
