I don't know enough Trump voters to generalize about why they voted, but I don't believe most of them voted for Project 2025. I doubt most of them knew what was in it. More to the point, I doubt most of them knew enough about how "the government" works and how it affects their day-to-day lives. Like all too many of us across the political spectrum, they knew even less about how "the economy" works or what causes inflation. So thanks to nonstop right-wing rabble-rousing, they were more into "owning the libs" and freaking out about immigrants of color and demographic changes in general.
I consider myself pretty well informed, and I didn't think I had any dewy-eyed illusions about U.S. democracy, but I'm shocked by how much damage the Trump administration has done to the U.S. and the wider world in less than three months.
I agree. I think most who voted for Trump were uninformed and influenced by his fake wealth, fake good businessman image (the fake “The Apprentice” show helped promote) and loved his glamorous lifestyle. They knew he was a felon. They knew he molested women. Those who voted for Trump were shallow and had no moral integrity.
I agree that maggots didn't know, but you know something? In this day and age, there's just no excuse for the kind of ignorance they're exhibiting right now. Willful ignorance is annoying AF, and I believe they didn't want to know. Even "owning the libs" came from some dark corner of their leaders' psyche and they wanted to believe that bullshit. Since when is owning anybody anything other than a red flag of the worst kind of dysfunction there is? WE TRIED TO TELL THEM, yet they fell down the rabbit hole and here we are. UGH in disgust. 🙄💣🤢
Absolutely "they didn't want to know," and they assumed they could have it both ways. (Some of us call this "magical thinking.") The decimation of the middle class has been going on since the union-busting, corporate-tax-breaks years of the Reagan administration. Many, many working-class white people either didn't see it or thought that owning the libs and the Black people and the uppity women was worth it. Upper-echelon Wall Street pretty much agreed.
Your comment -- "Since when is owning anybody anything . . ." -- made me think twice about that now-familiar phrase "owning the libs." I hadn't connected it to "owning" in the sense of owning slaves. Now the connection is obvious and I'm not going to forget it. Respect!
Aaaahhhhh, you got the nuance I intended. Sometimes saying the word 'slavery' makes people fly right into denial and think I'm talking about something that happened long ago. So, I intentionally don't say it. But you got it, and for that ... respect.
I've also lived through all this, for I'm in my latter 60's, born into Jim Crow, raised during the 60's, and I saw the whole thing come about. Am I ever tired, Susanna.
I came of political age in 1968, the year I turned 17. There's an early Sweet Honey in the Rock song, "B'lieve I'll Run On, See What the End's Gonna Be." I'm still running.
You are spot on. I live in the middle of the bible belt in Oklahoma where the majority is R, and I had to register as R just so that I could vote for the lesser of two evils because often we don't have democratic candidates on our state ballots. They're completely uneducated about the facts around government, how the economy works, and researching backgrounds. They are addicted to social media over any fact based media and get their news from their echo chamber of influencers and Fox news . Even now they don't realize anything is amiss, because that's not being fed to them through the propaganda they watch and listen to. It really is sad that they won't realize what is now unfolding until it rolls out and finally HURTS THEM. 😒
I believe that’s true with most Republican voters. Until they get hurt they won’t know what hit them. Foolish uninformed people, who only watch Faux News, when they decide to catch up on the News.
Don’t forget once the contents of Project 2025 started to get out there Trump outright lied he knew nothing about it. Since his “word” is good enough for his kool-aid drinkers they believed him. Although how anyone not in the 1% can vote for a republican is beyond me. They have decimated the middle class which is what’s really causing the angst people are feeling which lead them to Trump.
Trump said he wasn't associated with Project 2025 and therefore that's where it stopped for them. No amount of evidence was going to lead to them reconsidering the possibility, or at least become familiar with what it is.
Even though I am a New Zealand citizen, and live in New Zealand, I have many close ties to the US. I am shocked and appalled with this Administration lead by a con man, a rapist, a felon, a business failure and more. Then take the Republicans that have no spine the US is on a down ward spiral where the rest of the world will ignore. But peaceful protests in numbers, they have no voice against that, and that is the answer, week after week, and 3 million turn into 10, then 20.
Thank you, Scott! I truly enjoy Joy Reid! I use to watch her on MSNBC before I quit MSM completely. I don't watch any of it. I prefer to get my news from 1440, Bowers Media and the substacks I subscribe to. Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow are excellent journalists. Thanks again, Scott!
Scott Dworkin, Professor Reich, Bowers News Media, Dr. Mary Trump, People Power United, Dan Rather's Steady........there are a few more but I can't think of them right now. I'll add more when I think of them!
MSM including MSNBC kissed the ring and that is why I watch none of them. . Pro Democracy Independent Media like The Dworkin Report, Politics Girl, BTC, Meidas+ and the entire Meidas Network, Aaron Parnass, Adam Kinzinger, The Bulwark, and I may be forgetting one or two is all I need. I want truth and honesty and not both sides ism when one side is trying to destroy our democracy. Actually any one of these independent outlets gives more real news without sane washing than NPR,PBS, Cable News, and ABC, NBC, and CBS. PS: Oh yes republicans in congress are so afraid of being primaried or otherwise harmed by their Dear Leader that they forget that they are an independent branch of government and also forget that they represent we the people not the person whose ring they kiss.
This is fantastic. Two of my favorite people, together! I follow and share The Dworkin Report often because it's the ONLY publication with good news, not constant hand-wringing and worrying. And Joy Reid! Dumped MSNBC months ago & that network's poor decision-making re their star journalists of color is one of the reasons why. Been following her since AM Joy; will follow her anywhere.
This is so damn good. I shared it broadly. I really appreciate Joy excoriating senators for their cowardice and I really appreciate her calling forth Ta Nehisi Coates' quote “what’s the point of having a platform if you don’t use it.“ I believe we each have a platform let’s use it.
They have all forgotten - or choose to ignore - that "if we don't hang together, we will all hang separately" was intended to pluck up courage to do the right thing, not provide cower cover!
I have been fighting this scourge for a decade. I’m 72 now and tired, but Joy’s comments have given me more resolve and hope. Thank you for this podcast. It really, really helped me this morning. P.S. My name is Joyce.
"Do you agree with Joy that Republicans in Congress are cowards..."
I have a very strong suspicion that's going to return a 100% yes vote. Many thanks to Joy for her long term commitment to fighting these awful people.
It seems to be the case Charles! 👍👍 thank you!
Yes
Without a doubt.
I think 100% is about right.
Yes!

There's a great gospel song with similar words in it. 😉

If we knew, they surely knew…
The problem is what they were fed was all lies, by Right Wing News. They are basically lazy voters.

True. And hilarious. Joy Reid is terrific as is Scott Dworkin. Great start to a long day :D
Thank you so much!

Thanks Peggy!
What substacks do you subscribe to?
Scott Dworkin, Professor Reich, Bowers News Media, Dr. Mary Trump, People Power United, Dan Rather's Steady........there are a few more but I can't think of them right now. I'll add more when I think of them!
Adam Shiff’s notes is also another new one for me . Mayor Pete B is also bringing truth & strategies !
Thanks, ellmarree! I will check those out! I do love Mayor Pete! He is awesome!
Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Robert Hubbell, Timothy Snyder, Thom Hartmann, Olga Lautman, Georgia Fisanick, Shane Almgren , “Critical Resistance” (very shocking eye opener!), Jay Kuo, Mark Mansour are all excellent.
Thanks, Marlo! A few of these I haven't checked out, but I will! I appreciate your list!
Elizabeth Warren just started her Substack yesterday as well.

I've been subscribing to the Guardian, both US and UK editions, for several years now. I recommend it.
I like the Guardian too.
BBC, Reuters, AP, Rolling Stone.
It would not be quite so bad if it were only the ring they kissed…
Joy did not pull a single punch. She’s so great.
Absolutely
It’s wonderful to see Joy post- MSNBC. She’s thriving because she can fully be herself now. Thanks, Scott, for that uplifting interview.
Thank you for watching Leslye!

JOY REID IS AWESOME
Agreed!
Some are cowards, others like being bully’s!!!! Plus the monsters know they would never get into office any other way!!!
For sure Marg!

You’re the best, Scott. Your “Good Mews” emails are getting me through this nightmare.

Thanks Karen!
Joy makes me joyful!!
That's why I had her on Linda thank you!
