New Trump Grift Uncovered, His Racist Nominee Tanks, Arizona Sues To Get Grijalva Seated, Newsom Deploys Guard For Good Reason
Great news for us, terrible news for Trump
While Trump demands the DOJ give him $230 million as payback for their prosecutions of his many crimes, I’m happy to have more great news for you today.
MERKLEY HOLDS THE FLOOR
Dem Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon took to the Senate floor on Tuesday night, delivering a marathon speech that lasted for more than 22 hours and 30 minutes. Merkley slammed the Trump regime for the ongoing shutdown and its constant abuse of power.
At the start of his speech, Merkley declared: “I’ve come to the Senate floor tonight to ring the alarm bells. We’re in the most perilous moment, the biggest threat to our republic since the Civil War. [Trump] is shredding our Constitution.”
Merkley said: “I don’t believe there’s a single senator … who wants to see freedom crushed and authoritarian rule established here ... Our founders did not want the president to be a king.”
NEWSOM CALLS IN THE GUARD
As Trump’s shutdown threatens to delay food benefits for countless Americans, California is stepping up in a big way. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he’s deploying the National Guard to assist food banks in the state’s hardest-hit areas, and releasing $80 million in emergency funding.
Newsom said: “Trump and his GOP Congress’ refusal to end their government shutdown is ripping food benefits from families in need across America. California is filling the void—rushing tens of millions to food banks and directing the Cal Guard to support their efforts.”
A reminder that the National Guard can do great things—when it’s not being abused by Trump.
ARIZONA SUES
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit this week demanding that Dem Rep.-Elect Adelita Grijalva be seated in Congress.
The suit argues that Mike Johnson has “no practical reason why he is unable to administer the oath,” and asks the court to compel Johnson—or authorize another member—to swear Grijalva in.
ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST
Paul Ingrassia withdrew his nomination to lead the Office of Special Counsel yesterday, after racist texts he sent were made public.
His confirmation hearing—which was supposed to be today—was canceled. I’m sure Trump will find space for him with the rest of the rot—but for now, good riddance.
TWO NEW POLLS
There are two new polls out that spell bad news for Trump. I don’t think any of us wants to look at his face, so I put a pumpkin over it—you’re welcome.
A new PRRI survey shows 56% of Americans believe Trump’s a “potentially dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys democracy.” And a new CNBC poll finds that 53% blame “the potential economic fallout from the shutdown on Republicans.”
THIS ISN’T ABOUT MONEY
This week, Dem Sen. Brian Schatz shredded the GOP’s shutdown hypocrisy: “This is not about money. There is enough money to bail out Argentina with $20 billion … to purchase a brand new aircraft for $173 million for the DHS Secretary … [for] the White House ballroom. What there isn’t enough money for under this Republican government is you.”
That’s the truth. Republicans always find money for billionaires, corporate handouts, and themselves. But when it comes to actually investing in the American people, suddenly they say that we’re completely broke.
