Trump has insulted the poor, the black, the brown, the middle class, the military, the women, the men who support women, our intelligence agencies, the LGTBQ and anyone who doesn't follow the real teaching's of Jesus. He praises the rich, the autocrat's, the insurrectionist's and anyone willing to grovel at his feet. Please tell me why, why, why the polling for this traitor is so close? He belongs in solitary confinement, never being able to utter another word to the American people, or for that matter, anyone.

I suspect the polls of inaccuracy, but then I couldn't believe this con man would get elected in the first place, so I worry. For my Master's degree in German Language and Literature I had to study German history. I see the signs of what happened in Germany (and elsewhere) leading up to WWII, and those people were dealing with bread lines and almost needing a wheelbarrow to carry the money to buy groceries. We have people who are homeless or begging for food, but MAGA followers seem to be able to eat, by the looks of them. Hitler used propaganda to gain power, and we are subjected to it, too. I'm going to work hard for the rest of this election cycle and hope for the best.

With luck, the NY jury will return with a “guilty on all counts” verdict soon and Judge Merchan sentences him to prison for 4 years on each count, to be served consecutively! I never want to see that stinking orange turd again!

I understand that the sentences would be served concurrently, but I'll be surprised if he goes to jail at all, even if found guilty. One can always hope!

I have to agree with you Peggy. My husband has been prepping me since the beginning, when he was indicted, by reminding me that we have a two-tiered justice system but I'm starting to think it's three-tiered - the rich, donald trump, and then everyone else.

Scott, one thing I can't wrap my hands around is why veterans continue to support the 🟠💩 when he demeans those who served and/or were POW's, wounded, etc. The Obama and Biden administrations have done so much for our veterans and their families, yet I continue to see photos of veterans groups supporting the orange menace. Why?

Same with POC and other minority groups supporting the person who doesn't care at all about them and uses them over and over. Yet...there they are at his rallies. buying the shirts, shorts, etc. What gives with this?

Using social issues to make folks more emotional to override what’s best for them is my thought. There has been a steep decline in military support for Trump. Still too much though.

Trust me when I tell you there aren’t many of them, at least not where I live. My husband and I are both veterans, and we go to the VA a lot. I hear people talk, none of them are fans of Trump. Some have even said as republicans they can’t vote for him. The ones who do clearly support a traitor…

It really needs to be pointed out, very publicly, what Trump's policies have been and what he has said they will be-- for vets and other military. The disrespect someone who never served, whose family has never served, who gave away secrets to the Russians in the Oval Office-- just has to be made clear. Veterans are more likely to be on the streets, with PTSD and other ailments-- but what does Trump plan for them?

To mind immediately: It is now even more difficult for women in the military to get an abortion!

Veterans aren't one dimensional. They have other issues - like the population at large. Some are drawn to para military groups, for instance. Others want the church in charge. Easy for Trump to appeal to them.

Veterans have issues that Trump can and will never give a shit about. A lot of us have PTSD or other mental health issues. Veterans do better under democrats. It was Obama who finally got women vets medical services, opened up clinics for us. Before when I went to the VA we were enclosed in an old vault which locked in the outside. I’m grateful for the VA, but ours could use some updating and additional support.

We're diverging sharply, Scott. As much as I loathe Trump, and I loathe him fervently, I can't hold dodging the draft against him. There is no purer an expression of fascism than the idea that the state has the right to put someone in mortal jeopardy (as in military service) because he or she happened to be born within particular borders. Refusal to hand oneself over to the war machine was exactly the right thing to do in 1968, as it remains today. I do, of course, note, with infinite disgust, how Trump loves to pretend to be a strongman, and how morons in uniforms — cops, firemen, and soldiers fall for it. I have come to think of him as The Orangutan That Imagined Itself a Dictator®. While we're here, I will point out that patriotism — the genuine kind, or Trump's deeply sickening flag-hugging kind — is an evil scam the rich and powerful use to get the poor and powerless to die or kill for them in wars designed to make the rich richer and the powerful mightier. It goes hand in hand with imagining the inherent nobility of military service.

We do differ on this but that’s ok. I support those who were taking a stand to not be a part of the draft. What Trump did was not that. And you’re right about the strongman argument. This isn’t attacking “draft dodgers” it’s attacking a coward who likes to play tough, but his background says he used his family’s power to fake an injury to avoid the draft. If he had done so in protest that would be different.

Expand full comment

He is indeed a coward, and a fraud, and I suspect that a lot of the uniformed and other tough guys who worship him worship him because they recognise themselves to be no less fraudulent than he. My absolute favorite moment was when, after a school shooting, at some sort of Republican get-together circa 2018, he loudly mused that if his motorcade had passed the site of the shooting while it was going on, he'd have run in unarmed to confront the shooter, and then said, "I'll bet anyone in this room would have done the same." And sure enough, everyone in the room blurted, "Fuckin' A!" or some variation thereon. There was enough courage in that room to supply a small country!

I think Uvalde showed us how very valiant many uniformed tough guys really are.

Oh, and for the record, I got myself certified psychologically unfit for military service, and am not in the least ashamed of having done so. As asserted earlier, it matters far less HOW one avoids mllitary service than that he or she does avoid it. https://soundcloud.com/john-mendelssohn/a-song-for-the-war-machine

Exactly right, Greg. As is too clearly evidenced by the fact of around half the electorate regarding The Orangutan That Imagined Itself a Dictator® a viable political leader, America is colossally stupid. And forgive me for asking, but you're not the Greg Sanford with whom I worked on music in the mid-70s, are you? The guy who broke my heart by running off to imitate Led Zeppelin in Hammerhead rather than stick with me? :-)

Most draft dodgers did so because they were vehemently opposed to the war in Vietnam. Donald Trump was a coward. He said STDs were his Vietnam. Too bad he didn't give his life on that hill.

When I see veterans, especially Vietnam Era veterans, waving their "Trump 2024" signs and sporting their "God's Anointed" paraphernalia while chanting "Fuck Joe Biden", I wonder what part of Trump's message attracted them? Is it people they knew dying around them were really "losers"? Was it friends and classmates who got drafted were really "suckers"? Was it when he called the same people they served with in Vietnam, who had their back, rapists, murderers, pedophiles and worse do the trick? Or was it when he told his Chief of Staff to never have a handicapped soldier sing the Star Spangled Banner for him ever again? Please, enquiring minds would love to know.
