They Wrote Down Why. Then They Scrubbed It.
In March, Galveston County, Texas, held its primary election. People were voting for county commissioner and justice of the peace. Then in June, the county’s governing board redrew district lines, making the new map effective that same day. Those lines are what decide which races you get to vote in. Voters had already picked their candidates under the old ones.
On June 8, the county wrote that their goal was “improving partisan performance in favor of Republican candidates.”
Three weeks later, the commissioners’ order that adopted the new map removed that sentence. In its place, the board said it had “determined that the interests of the people of the county are best served by changing the existing” boundaries.
Then their own lawyers put it back. Page 29 of their brief to the Texas Supreme Court: “The 2026 Map was enacted to satisfy a partisan purpose.”
About 50 residents packed the June 29 meeting to object, among them Diane Merchant. The board adopted the map anyway, 5-0. So Merchant sued, along with Wilma Green and Constable Derreck Rose.
On Friday they won. The Texas Supreme Court found the county had “identified no historical precedent” and “no valid source of legal authority” for what it did. November runs on the March lines.
Fifty people spoke up in that room and lost the vote. Three of them took it to the state’s highest court and won it back for everyone.
Trump’s Ballot Rule Just Lost At The Supreme Court
For weeks, courts have been blocking pieces of Trump’s mail ballot rule. On Monday the Supreme Court refused to rescue it.
The rule would’ve let the Postal Service refuse to deliver your ballot unless your county clerk had first uploaded your name to a federal portal.
The regime asked the justices to lift Judge Indira Talwani’s block and let the rule start anyway. They said no, in two sentences: the government is “unlikely to succeed on the merits,” and the equities don’t favor stepping in. Justice Alito dissented, joined by Justice Thomas. Two dissents, from a court with six Republican appointees.
It was the second loss in two days. On Sunday, Judge Carl Nichols, whom Trump put on the bench in 2019, blocked the same rule in a separate case. Nothing in the law creating the Postal Service, he held, lets it “impose new election procedures on state election officials, to create a data collection system for mail-in and absentee voters, or to refuse the transmission of lawful mail.”
Nobody voted to let the Post Office decide whose ballot arrives. A judge Trump appointed said it was never theirs to decide, and this week the Supreme Court refused to lift the block.
She Spent Christmas Trying To Save 303 Jobs
After Hurricane Katrina, Congress wrote a law saying the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “may not substantially or significantly reduce” FEMA’s “authorities, responsibilities, or functions.” Pretty clear, right?
On Friday, federal Judge Susan Illston ruled DHS broke that law by seizing FEMA’s power over its own workforce, and FEMA’s leadership illegally went along. Federal employee unions sued in April of 2025 and spent 17 months proving it. Here’s what they proved.
In late 2025, FEMA’s own offices said the agency needed about 24,000 people. On December 4, acting FEMA head Karen Evans sent DHS a staffing plan for 11,383. Less than half.
Nobody could say where that staffing number came from. The DHS official who told Evans to include a 50% cut was asked under oath and couldn’t recall the conversation. Neither could anyone else. Illston wrote that the figure “appears as if pulled from thin air.”
Then Christmas Day. La’Toya Prieur, FEMA’s head of personnel, spent it preparing renewal paperwork for 303 disaster workers whose jobs were about to expire. Evans never submitted it. On December 31 she met with DHS instead and wrote in her notes: “Not going to approve the CORES.”
Officials deleted their own messages about all of it. So Illston barred the government from using testimony that denies the plan existed.
DHS was never allowed to decide who works at FEMA. They don’t get to pull a number out of the air, delete the messages, and call it a plan. Hurricane season runs through November, and the agency that shows up after the storm hits is still standing.
Eric Trump Said They Were Paid. One Sign Answered Him.
When asked about the protests against him on Saturday morning, Donald Trump said he didn’t know there were any. It couldn’t be very big, he said, because he’d been all over Ireland already. Then he called it a “friendly protest.”
While he was saying it, thousands were gathering to march from Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance to the Irish parliament, chanting: “Donald Trump, can you hear? We don’t want you here.”
Before Trump landed, a poll found that 69% of Irish people didn’t want him to come in the first place. He came anyway, for a golf tournament at a resort he owns, seven weeks before an election. Totally “normal” stuff.
Hundreds of others stood outside of Shannon Airport against Trump. In Doonbeg, a village of 279 people where his resort is based, around 30 people lined the road as buses carried spectators past.
Eric Trump went on Irish radio to spread the old lie that the protesters were being paid. Ray Walsh came up from Limerick with a piece of cardboard that read: “I’m not being paid $5,000 to be here.” Days earlier, the regime had promised every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep Congress.
Bernie Ní Fhlarta came from Galway with a sign reading “No Fáilte for Fascists.” Fáilte means welcome, and Ireland sells itself to tourists as the land of céad míle fáilte, a hundred thousand welcomes. Ní Fhlarta told Irish radio it’s inappropriate for a president of any country to use political power to further a family business.
Trump tells the world everyone loves him and brings his own cameras to prove it. This time the footage showed a capital city, an airport, and a village of 279 all telling him to go home. Seven weeks from today, we get our turn.
