Yesterday, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was wrongfully arrested while outside of an ICE facility—in the city he represents.
Here’s what happened: Baraka was peaceful the entire time. After being allowed onto the private property, he left immediately when asked. Then, while on public property, armed individuals swarmed Baraka in a dramatic ambush and took him into custody. Absolutely nothing justified this arrest.
ICE’s armed representatives then got physical with two Members of Congress—Dem Reps. LaMonica McIver and Bonnie Watson Coleman—while Dem Rep. Rob Menendez tried to protect his colleagues.
Instead of retreating, the Reps. stood their ground and held a press conference.
Menendez gave an impassioned speech right after the brutal ordeal, calling Trump out: “It was an act of intimidation … This Administration lies every day … They feel no weight of the law and no restraint on what they should be doing. And that was shown in broad daylight today when they not just arrested the Mayor of Newark, but when they put their hands on two Members of Congress.”
Menendez went on: “To anyone in this country … this is unacceptable and it should shake every American to the core … This will not be the end of it.” He’s right.
Watson Coleman added: “ICE is out of control. ICE thinks it can intimidate all of us. And it cannot intimidate any of us.” This is the kind of pushback we need.
Soon after, a large crowd gathered to protest outside the ICE facility—a few hours later, Baraka was released. And what did he do? He immediately rejoined the protest.
Baraka told the crowd: “All of us here, every last one of us, I don’t care what background you come from, what nationality, what language you speak … at some point we have to stop these people from causing division between us.”
The Trump regime wasted no time spreading a bunch of lies about what happened. That’s to be expected—but to make matters worse, corporate media parroted that propaganda. Shame on them and all the desperate-for-attention right-wing mouthpieces, who acted like this was some big win. It absolutely was not.
In the end, this Trump campaign of fear will do nothing but fuel the flames of the opposition, and drive us forward as a united, passionate, and peaceful force to be reckoned with.
We also had some big movement across America yesterday.
Tufts Ph.D. student Rümeysa Öztürk was finally released after Judge William Sessions ruled: “There is no evidence here … her continued detention cannot stand.”
Trump cult member Ed Martin's nomination to be US Attorney for DC has been withdrawn. This is thanks to overwhelming public pressure. Good riddance.
Federal judges struck down an Alabama congressional district map for discriminating against Black voters. Former President Barack Obama summed it up: “Black voters in Alabama will continue voting in fair congressional districts ... This is a win for Alabama, and proof that progress is possible when you make your voices heard.”
On the Trump regime’s darkest days, we must continue to be the light that fights this tyranny. That’s why I formed our activism arm—The Watchdog Coalition—to run our enormous Contact Congress initiative, and unmatched social media campaigns.
