Hey Scott. This is the first time I have written a letter to my congress members. Your form starts out with a letter to my House Representative. I wanted to make it more personal, so I deleted all the parts that had to do with the Senate. I thought that I could do the same personalizing with my senators. But your form sends the same letter I wrote to my representative to my senators. I guess that was why there was so much information about the Senate. I realize you want to make it quick and easy for people, but isn’t it more powerful for letters to be personalized?

Expand full comment
L Johnson's avatar

Elizabeth, I agree with personalized letters. I look at Scott's letter for points I want to cover, then write my own. I was an aide to 2 (state) reps and I guarantee you that the reps do NOT read the letters. Aides read them and tally the opinions for or against and relay to the reps. I firmly believe brief but more frequent communications are most effective. Politicians are 'flooding our zones' - let's flood THEIR zones on a daily basis!

Do you think aides give equal value to emails that are generated automatically versus personally written emails?

Expand full comment
L Johnson's avatar

Well - let me preface my answer by saying ANY communication that people make to their elected representatives is GOOD. If nothing else, it is a reminder to them that we are paying attention. And I greatly appreciate Scott putting links and suggestions at the top of his daily posts. But I remember getting 100 letters about an issue that were exactly the same. Clearly someone photocopied the letter and distributed to a hundred different people to sign. As an aide reading it, it didn't seem to have the same impact as an individualized letter. Honestly, I think if people called/emailed several times a week with a short message like "Get out of Venezuela!" "Restore health care subsidies!" "Release the Ep files!" it is more effective. Then they know that we haven't forgotten about the Ep files (as an example). Plus it doesn't take as much time as a long letter which they probably will skim over at best. I have 2 MAGA senators. I know they don't care about my opinion, but I sure am going to tell them anyway. I will NOT be silent.

Is there a better/worse to letters vs. phone calls? Does leaving a voice mail count as much as speaking with someone?

What about postcards to keep it short and sweet, if they can tell they are hand-written? Will they pay attention to those? The aides, I mean, obviously the people who allegedly represent us don't.

Expand full comment
L Johnson's avatar

They count about the same. The important thing is to MAKE CONTACT somehow. I often call, leave a message, then follow up with an email. A phone call is the quickest way to register your opinion. Email takes a bit longer. Postcards are good, too. I have my MAGA senators on speed dial. Since their staff never answers in person, I call them ALL times of day and night. I find it cathartic to call and politely express my opposition to their stupid policies and actions. I usually end my call with "and release the EP files, you have not distracted me". I want their phone lines burning up and their mailboxes filling up over capacity. I want to be like that mosquito who keeps buzzing you and never leaves you alone.

I have been told that phone calls have more weight than emails and voicemails are listened to and tallied but I think a direct phone call still is better. Try the five calls app if you have an iPhone.

I agree, i signed the war powers letter tonight and found it exceedingly long & detailed, so I deleted some paragraphs.

It is worth sending though, because it will be counted as a demand for Congress to act.

I write all 3 of my Congress Critters every week. It gets a lot easier over time. My problem is that they are all 3 Dems. We need frustrated people writing to their rethug critters. Those guys need to be scared and angry - it'll make them make more mistakes.

Expand full comment
celeste k.'s avatar

This is essentially my problem...when I write my Reps, it's like preaching to the choir. At work, I stress to every patient that crosses my path how essential it is to contact their congressperson and Senators, and make sure they are registered to vote in the state where they live.

I write my three repugnant members of Congress regularly, and it's not pretty. It also feels pointless, as I get canned responses only, if any response at all, and they all toe the line.

Expand full comment
Sharon C Storm's avatar

Members of Congress get lots of mail. They keep track of both those in agreement with them, and those opposed. Keep up the good work, the more opposition they receive the less likely they are to continue to stick to the regime. There is always one straw that breaks the camel’s back. That may be your letter.

I go to my Congress member’s web page. They usually have a “Contact Me” option. You can fill in your personal info and write your own message. Sometimes I copy a pre-written message (to a Word document) without sending it, edit, then copy and paste into their form. It takes a bit more time because it must be done 3 times.

Debbie E's avatar

I do the same thing on a weekly basis. I even received a call from my reps office and was able to again, verbally, address my concerns. When I write I always request a response, and the response is ALWAYS the same form letter of a non-answer and more pats on their own backs. Doesn't matter, I will continue to be that thorn in their sides for as long as the snake and his evil gang of satanic demons remain in office.

Hi Scott,

Why do you think Trump and Hegseth are trying so hard to attack Sen. Mark Kelly?

Because Sen. Kelly is highly respected and if he can convince military members to refuse illegal orders, then Trump and Hegseth have nothing to use to force their agendas. Also, narcs hate boundaries and challenges and the honorable Sen. Kelly won't back down.

Do you think Trump actually believes his 9/11 lie?

No. In fact, Trump, on 9/11/01 BRAGGED that he now had the tallest building in NYC. What an absolutely disgusting and reprehensible thing to say in the midst of such horror. We should keep reminding MAGA that he said this.

Senator Mark Kelly is a hero. Trump and Hegseth are using our Armed Forces to perform illegal activities. They do not want Senator Kelly exposing their action. We are very grateful for Senator Kelly’s courage. I don’t think Trump is mentally capable or morally astute enough to think rationally. He is a selfish and narcissistic individual that thinks he is entitled to whatever he wants.

Honestly, Scott,

You're documenting the playbook in real time: rewrite 9/11, pardon the rioters, strip decorated veterans' ranks, count lies as truth. Same machinery keeping dead conservation sites on active ledgers and claiming Mission Accomplished over twitching corpses in a country where we have no business playing around in.

Trump and Hegseth are afraid of Sen. Mark Kelly. He speaks the truth every. single. time. Both of those idiots want everyone to live in their la la land and We the People refuse to do so. I will always believe Sen. Mark Kelly over those two dimwits every day of the week and twice on Sunday! How dare Hegseth try to take away what Sen. Kelly earned! Between the two of them, they don't hold a candle to the likes of Sen. Kelly! What a stain and a disgrace they are! I do not believe the orange POS knows what he believes or says half the time! The man is absolutely, certifiably nuts! If I have said it once, I have said it a million times to maga and this regime, spin your lies about January 6 all you want to. Those of us who saw it with our own eyes, heard it with our own ears in real time know exactly what happened on that day and we will ensure that our children know the truth about it. We will always point out the lies that this corrupt regime and maga sickos tell about that day and explain why it is a lie and what really happened. Nothing they say will take away the insurrectionists stain that has attached itself to every single one of them!
