My spirits are lifted by spending time with like-minded people and I am buoyed by the 90+% of the responses that are positive - honks, waves, thumbs up, peace signs, and fists raised in solidarity. And the people that roll down there car windows to yell thank you!

Great advice, Cheryl. Yes. I am in an Indivisible chapter. I also protest when I can and agree that it is a very hopeful, uplifting, and peaceful experience. Stay safe out there!
I like to suggest Indivisible to everyone because (1) I am still encountering people who aren't familiar with it (admittedly way less likely for readers of this substack 😊) or (2) I am told (mostly in comments online) that "we don't have a chapter around here". But when I ask their zip code, it turns out quite often that there IS a chapter near them.
Cheryl, what you do is a great example of why it is incumbent upon us to educate others this way. The more they know, the more they are willing to stand up for what is right.

I found myself writing my second letter this week, today to tell them (all 3 are Dems) just how truly awful this is.

I spoke last night here in NE PA at a vigil for those killed by ICE. I took your suggestion to heart. As a longtime coach who was successful at caring about my student athletes welfare, those that knew that could also understand when I was in "coach mode" I might come off sternly when offering advice or critiquing an aspect of their performance in drills at practice. My wife also reminded me not to point at a person when asking something. I gently tasked the gathering last night to promise to ask one person they know about why that vote or not to vote. Lasting change starts with little things done well everyday.

This might make them defensive. Bringing up your concerns, asking about theirs, and really listening might work better for some folks.
Maybe more accurately, asking such a question would REVEAL their
defensive attitudes. A question is neutral (as it has been explained to me,
even if it is a 'leading question'), unless it's of the dubious variety as this
one:
'Is it true that you have stopped beating your wife?'
Maybe 'What was it that YOU voted for when you voted for this guy?'
