I think Biden’s reception shows how weary we are of this catastrophe-a-minute, angry, vitriolic, self-serving hate-monger in office and WE WANT STEADY, PEACEFUL, COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP BACK. Biden embodies that.

Wis, we have heard of the 'shadow cabinets' of some countries, which operate as a counterforce to a corrupt or incompetent regime. President Biden might be viewed as a 'shadow president' to this savagely destructive regime, someone who constantly displays the leadership qualities that our 'supreme ogre' lacks. The present and coming round of progressive leaders need to draw from Biden's example and rebuild from the catastrophe that is the failed incumbent regime.

I would love to see gun owners exchange their weapons for muskets so they have what weapons our Founding Fathers had and used when our country was founded. You know, the ones they were talking about?

Expand full comment
Wis's avatar

Yeah, the second amendment was not about every American owning a machine gun to pick off fellow citizens or political figures or to terrorize. I believe it was about defending ourselves against tyranny. Guess what? This is it. This is what the founding fathers meant: our current government most definitely qualifies and the founding fathers would agree, I’m sure.

(I’m still not getting a gun though.)

Expand full comment
Megan Ross's avatar

My neighbor and I, both single women in our 60s, have discussed buying guns, just for protection. I owned a gun years ago and did target practice about once a month, but sold it back to the gun shop years ago. I'm scared.😞

Expand full comment
Robot Bender's avatar

I don't blame you, Megan. I bought a handgun in February and have been going to the range once a week since then. I was raised in a hunting family with long guns, though I'm not a hunter. I'm not encouraging anyone to do this unless you've thought it through. My very red state (MO) has NO gun laws, except getting a certificate to carry concealed.

I'm a senior and though I don't need one, I carry a cane which is also a weapon, just in case. I hate having to think like this, but I'd rather be a porcupine than a rabbit.

Yeah. I am, too. I probably should have added “yet” when saying I’m still not getting a gun, but I just don’t know if I could use it on a living thing. I honestly don’t. But it’s ironic that the folks who see what’s happening for what it truly is, are the folks less likely to be armed.

As Maia said in the original post, the founders had muskets; they couldn’t fathom AK 47s etc.

I couldn't shoot a defenseless animal, which is why I never wanted to hunt. However, as police lieutenant and a sergeant I worked with several years ago suggested if I wanted a gun in the house for protection, get a shotgun. Just the sound of it being racked ready to fire would almost certainly send the intruder fleeing. That being said, if your life is on the line, I think any of us would shoot that "living thing" if it means our survival.

Expand full comment
Wis's avatar

Yes. True. And like you, I couldn't hunt (wouldn't hunt). I couldn't shoot a non-human either (not to say that a human would be easier, though some humans are pretty abhorrent, whereas nonhumans don't carry so much malice and hatred. They're usually instinctive, surviving as evolution "taught" them, and/or reacting to how they've been treated).

I agree Wis. But I have a very liberal friend who attended her town hall meeting of her rep in CA. She was angry at Raskin who talked to the attendees. She said we don't want a constitutional law lecture we want action!

Expand full comment
Wis's avatar

Pam: Yes, but words and action aren’t (and mustn’t) be mutually exclusive. I think both approaches are needed. Lawful debate/arguing and action need to go together, or we become like trump/maga. We must not become merely reactionary, acting rash without thought. I think Raskin’s pointed statement, “You know precisely who is implicated in the Epstein files, yet you refuse to release them. Who are you protecting and why?” is, granted, something I wish he’d asked Patel in a public forum (not a letter) so we could watch Patel stammer and squirm in that wide-eyed, sniveling way he has, but Raskin confronted him with a pointed, direct, bare bones question nonetheless.

Expand full comment
Wis's avatar

Oh, I get it, for sure. Responding to a blatant, criminal, unconstitutional action (or conspiracy to NOT act) with *only* words is not enough anymore. There's no shame in this regime, so shaming doesn't do a thing. That's why lawful action must back up strong words. Fire in the heart must show through, too, in my opinion. Lip service and half-assed attempts at DOING mean nothing and do everything to demonstrate that we are as weak as they make us out to be. This is where Newsom, for example, gets it. And Pritzker.
