A reporter caught Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez outside the Capitol this week with a gift-wrapped question: JD Vance had just declared, on a podcast, that he figures she'll be the Democrats' 2028 frontrunner. Her whole face did the work before her mouth did.
"I mean, um…" she started, already laughing. Then, four words: "I hope he is."
🚨 Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have announced the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center Moratorium Act, legislation that would enact a reasonable pause to the development of AI to ensure the safety of humanity.
Okay, call me a hard hearted Hanna, but I think the farmers should suffer a bit longer. Here in Minnesota most of them voted for trump and they should understand the corruption, fraud, and lies they voted for and how it hurt their livelyhood. However, as a Democratic governor - as we have here - I guess it's a great way to get some votes. But have they learned their lesson. Still, they just want a handout no matter who gives it to them and they will just continue their reoublican ways.
Stephen- you are right here in Wisconsin many farming families voted for Trump. They have no reality check I have a friend in my book club whose family runs a beef farm between Madison and St.Paul.You know the area beautiful farm land and perfect for raising specific kinds of cattle. They voted for the 🍊 3 times- ugh- because quote "they were angry" Angry about what they are some of most successful farmers I have ever met. They hire immigrants, they have grandchildren of color...total disconnect. On flip side over the River my Moms family ran a small dairy farm in Minnesota, they survived the depression are Irish Catholic never ever did they vote for a Republican.(They never were rich but Loved ppl) Thanks Stephen- sorry for the rant.
Love hearing your story. I have a really hard time understanding farmers' support for the crazed regime & their subsequent dismay when they learn they were screwed,
The farmers, and others, in rural Minnesota have voted Republican for years. The trump campaigns were ugly and mean-spirited. The rural folks are angry and frustrated, and there's a big divide between rural Rs and urban Ds. I do not have the answer, but I hope somebody comes up with something solid to bring us together again. It's painful to see those horrid, hate-filled banners on farmers' lands. DJT fuels the hatred, leverages hate to his advantage, then leaves 'em hanging. AND they keep falling for it!
I live in Minneapolis but have a small farmstead just outside of Willmar and I have to say I see a LOT fewer trump signs on Hwy 12. With that said, there are still several "Failed Waltz" signs out there. Some people just never learn, I guess.
That is exactly what I don't get. It seems the R's just keep voting for the same bs and then they cry about it. They put this regime in office AGAIN! And IQ47 2.0 is far worse than 1.0! What was it Einstein said "Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome, is the definition of insanity" seems to apply here.
We have ALL been subjected to Psy Ops from this regime for the last decade. Everyone processes it differently and some are more susceptible to it than others. I sure don't know why. But if you want to 'punish' farmers, you are going to hurt yourself in the end. Food shortages and easily obtained weapons are a nasty combination. We will ALL suffer and it will get real ugly real fast.
I grew up on a dairy farm in Wis. My family has been Dems all their lives. I think energy is better directed at the wealthy profiting off our misery than your fellow citizen.
I wish the best for all of us, including understanding of truth, the ability to understand people wanting power and their tactics, to discern truth from lies, and to understand the need to stand up for fellow human beings, and yo understand who is dedicated and trustworthy vs. who is not. I also wish everyone the ability to understand our Constitution and what is and is not right. When we can obtain a population with greater understanding, caring, and responsibility, so much more of the situation should be clear.
Your points about people being hungry and more are a great concern, understandably! We absolutely must survive this time, and I am grateful for everyone trying to help.
Having grown up in a farming area with some family members involved in farming, and having had agriculture near me all my life, I have never understood how farmers or anyone else could believe lies, put trust in a particular person, and not understand the truth which affects them directly and everyone in one way or another. Thank you for caring and your efforts to help.
I get your point...though personally I highly doubt there will be a food shortage resulting in armed gangs roaming the streets. It did happen in in France in 1789. And since you grew up as a dairy farmer, I think you have some insights into the pitfalls of corporate farming, right? So help me. You understand the culture of rural farmers, right? What can we do as Democrats to help shift their perception of what happening to them and the reason it is happening? My personal experience speaking with my neighbors in rural Kandiyohi County, MN is they just shut up and don't want to talk about it. Suggestions, please?
Thanks Stephen for speaking up about the curious way in which many, if not most farmers cling to the GOP. We have the same thing going on here in Washington state. And DJT declares us a blue state and paints our farmers with the same brush when it comes to withholding money for everything from fighting wild fires, to schools, health care, clinics, transportation, etc. while also stripping many farms from the immigrant workers who have been tending those farms and orchards for decades! I imagine many farm owners truly work from sunup to sundown and may not live online or on their cellphones to be updated with what is really going on. Still, they do talk to one another and some of them are truly feeling the pinch of DJT tariffs and Iran War decisions. Maybe what Gov. Hochul is doing in NY will stir some farmers awake across the country!!! I hope so!!! :-)
I understand those long hours of dedicated work in farming and in other areas of work. Understanding that finding more than one news source is important, and evaluating the news received matters. Even when I explained to someone, some years ago, that the particular televised news source was creating lies by cutting off film clips and making statements that were not true, and that I had seen the whole thing live rather than the partial abuse being shown, or when I said that someone’s words were cut off mid sentence and promoted not as the person had intended, or even as the person had stated, I was not believed! The truth was ignored. The promoters of wrong information and misconstrued concepts were praised, and the negative images were built within the minds of everyone watching who did not know better. The news sources matter, and the truth matters. When people have needs for better living, it is tragic that they are misled and taken advantage of as they are. Many minds are played upon, and the people are made bait in various ways, yet nobody I know, who chooses any source of distorted “news”, will listen to the truth. To see the original filming, to listen to and to read words of the other people or candidates open minds.
Oh yes Judy, what you say has been many of our experiences too, when trying to talk with those who vote for Trump. He has them enthralled like a lover who promises the moon. And they keep returning to him, time and time again, just like the jilted lover who keeps remembering his promises. Do they hear talk of ballrooms and such, and think that includes them??? No way to get into how they think. Really. The good news is that some long time republicans have seen enough! The polls show it! YEAH! They hear about the GOP wanting to cut SS and Medicare. And they see how badly the Iran War has hit everyone. Many are past military members and Hegseth and DJT are not sitting well with them. So.... we have to be thankful for the republicans who can think and want no part of what is going on!!! Let us hope they talk amongst themselves and spread the word.
Stephen, although I understand that the many people who voted for what is happening or he has pushed to have happen, that good people are trying to reverse and counter, are farmers who need to understand that the problems they face are because of their votes, yet I believe two things in addition to being thankful for the relief coming from actions of good people in our government. Both important facts are that not every farmer voted for the person trying to wreck the farmers’ lives, and that without our farmers surviving and agriculture thriving, everyone will suffer. I am thankful for the safety reported by Scott today.
Judy, I like to eat too. Farmers are critical to our wellbeing and in Minnesota - I know Wisconsin and Washington state (thank you for the Cosmos apples) not every farmer voted for trump. But if you look at the statistics, 85% of them did. So, I have a son. When he was a teen and early twenties he became addicted to alcohol. My husband and I were at the end of our rope. We resorted to "tough love" and insisted if he did not get treatment and finish college we would cut him out of our will. It took only one month in a treatment center, he finished college, has several graduate degrees and a CPA and is now a CFO for a large pain clinic in the Twin Cities. It was painful to make him see what he was doing was only hurting himself. That's how I feel about the farmers. Unless they are forced to confront the consequences of their actions, they will never change. While I do not want their families to suffer and lord knows we need the family farmers, not corporate farms, they need to see the reality of their actions. That's all I'm saying.
I fully understand, and I thank you for sharing. Your tough love is understandable, too, and I am so happy to know of the happy outcome for each of you!
As far as the percentage of farmers, or the percentage of any category of people who have been or are supporters of the person, I shall never understand
reasoning and decision making. I was shocked to see signs and even barns painted in places where I would never have expected to see such a stance, showing that support. Still, none of it makes sense, and I fully understand the need for those supporters to understand the truth, the effect of their own votes. Thank you for taking time to share and for all you are doing to help!
I feel the same way. Usually I have a lot of sympathy for farmers since I live in a rural, farming area of the country. However, in this case, they were told what would happen but voted for him in droves anyway. He is going to pay them off again to buy their votes. Why aren’t the average citizens getting a check? We have paid more for everything ( food, gas, utilities, etc.) due to the tariffs. For instance, my trash collection company changes a fuel surtax. It went up $20 on this month’s invoice because of the price of diesel. We deserve to get something too!
What stood out to me is how many different people pushed back this week and actually won. A judge. A state. Even some Republicans who decided enough was enough on that voter bill.
It’s not one big dramatic moment. It’s a lot of people in different places refusing to roll over. That adds up.
I hear you Jane. Who could have ever imagined one administration could be so terrible?!?! But, here is how I think of it, imagine a family that discovers the father has been a terrible crook and murderer, that family is shook to the core even though they were not involved in the wrong doing. Stunned they try to recover. We are like that family!! Only we are still walking around with this damn albatross around our necks! WE must shake it off and stand up for what we know the US to be. WE will survive this time and move into the future with many lessons learned. I truly believe that. WE need you to keep the faith with us Jane! :-)
The families who have lost loved ones, had deportations, have lost their homes, have had education and best efforts knocked out from under them, and more people still have much emotion as well as hardship to face. Thank goodness people are trying to help save our country, its people, and the rights of the people.
I have been suggesting a class action suit against the corrupt reptilian MAGA cult for several of the things they have done. I am exceedingly emotionally devasted that the fat ass imbecile demolished our historical White House with a wrecking ball. I am still searching for a group of attorneys to bring this class action suit. I call the MAGA cult the Reptilian party - not the Republican party.
I'm with you; even asked a lawyer friend if this was possible. He answered that "Trump and his people are by and large protected by "sovereign immunity." ", a doctrine that was wrongly expanded by the Supreme Court. Does NOT applie to his minions, though -- we'll have to wait for our "Nuremberg Trials". BTW, I like reptiles a lot more than these spineless crooks and greedy egotists.
I am in the same boat Barbara. Don't know what I will do if the GOP cuts SS and Medicare as they keep talking about. I guess none of them have family members like you and I, who will have nothing left to live on. And who do they think will vote for any GOP politicians??? EVERYBODY better wake up to their ignorant cruelty! There they are with their gala dinners and ballrooms and god only know what else.. mostly at our expense!!!. SHESHH! Hang in there Barbara! WE are going to cook their goose!!! I believe that! :-)
Food at the store, and food bought in restaurants or drive ups is extremely costly. So are gasoline and utility bills plus taxes. Medical costs also are high. Everything is!
Taxes infuriate me. Our government isn’t working for us, so why are we paying taxes? Particularly women as they rip our rights from us in every direction.
We need to be able to depend on the wise allocations of money to benefit our needs and wishes by the good people in Congress to be upheld rather than taken wrongfully for alternative purposes.
Trumps unethical and illegal policies are hitting me the hardest by my heart and robbing me of being proud of my country. I am a very proud USAF veteran with recall time served in the Gulf War (yes, I’m old) and I used to be proud to be an American. I am fortunate enough to be able to weather the financial crisis thus far, but my heart bleeds for those who are struggling to get by and for anyone who is on the chief criminal’s unacceptable non-white list. I hope to be proud of my country once again and that all citizens and welcome immigrants can feel safe and have a good life.
I'm retired, living on a pension plus Social Security. I don't drive much so the fuel price isn't a big hit and we grow vegetables which are preserved so food isn't hitting that hard. But the electric bill hurts and with this heat, we are using more to run the heat pump. That should be eased a bit if the permissions are ever finished and the solar panels can go in. But all this GOP talk of "saving" Social Security by cutting benefits instead of raising the ceiling so that those who earn more can pay more has be on edge.
The states were always meant to do what the federal government couldn't or wouldn't do. They are the test labs for legislation and the remedies for federal failures. Good for NYS.
I believe it would be in our country's best interest, everytime Mike Johnson sends the house home because he doesn't want them to vote on a bill, said people he sends home should have their pay docked. I don't get paid when I don't work and neither should people who are supposed to be working for us. No work, No Pay. Simple. Maybe then they would put their noses to the grind stone and get stuff done. These stalling techniques are hurting us not them. They get more time off and our prices soar. We elected these people to office to work for us. Get to work!

Actually, Trump's policies hit my emotional well-being the hardest. I wish we could start a classaction suit for emotional cruelty.
And all the people detained illegally need to be included
The families who have lost loved ones, had deportations, have lost their homes, have had education and best efforts knocked out from under them, and more people still have much emotion as well as hardship to face. Yes, I do.
Groceries and rent are the highest costs - SS barely covers rent. Medicare helps but certain meds are so costly we just do without.
